Each stallion in the pedigree of the horse has its own breeding value for a trait,
and the estimated value of the prospected horse can be derived from that.Let's take as
an example a young horse with the following pedigree: Larino x Matterhorn x Indoctro x
Wellington. If it is 140 or higher, it belongs to the 2.2% best of the
population, and if it is higher than 160, it belongs to the 0.1% best of
the population. We have to note here that the average value for both dressage index
and show jumping index for the entire population is 100, and that the standard deviation
is 20. This means that if a horse has a breeding index of 120 or
higher, that it belongs to the 15.8% best of the population. The KWPN publishes every
year the breeding indices for all stallions for a large number of traits, including the
sport indices, which represent the genetic merit of each stallion for either dressage or show
jumping.When the dressage index is high, the stallion will have a high genetic merit for
dressage. The formula to calculate the nike tn breeding index is therefore:BI-sire / 2 + BI-grand sire
/ 4 + BI grand-grand-sire/8 + BI grand grand sire / 8 + BI grand
grand grand sire / 16 + Average / 16.The value for the average/16 is added
for the grand grand grand dam, and as we don't know the breeding value for
it, the average of the population is the best estimate (the contribution of 1/16th is

141 / 8 + 113 / 16 + 100 / 16 = 138A breeding value
of 138 is quite high, almost two standard deviations above the average. When we consider

personality, size and conformation, but it is good to realize that the breeding indices are
established from performance of relatives (usually offspring) of the stallions relative to the performance of

dressage is:96/2 + 103 / 4 + 99 / 8 + 105 / 16 +
100 / 16 = 102. They are raised in a group of broodmares to make
sure that they grow up in a natural social environment. The breeding values as published
by KWPN for these for show jumping are: 157, 114, 141, 113 respectively.Half of the
genes of the animal is contributed by the sire, a quarter by its grand sire

This means that this particular horse belongs to the top 2.5% of the population with
respect to its ability for show jumping.We can do the same exercise for dressage index.
The names of the stallions are the sire, grand sire, grand grand sire etc. Fortunately,
the major studbooks in Europe have developed systems to evaluate the genetic merit of individual
animals. The breeding indices for the respective stallions are: 96, 103, 99, 105. We breed
for talent, and at the age of three, they start their training under the saddle.
